Communication isn't just limited to opening your mouth and talking. Your body and your actions speak louder than words. In a business setting, there are prospects and contacts who will assess you based on your outward appearance, and what your body language says.
Body language is really intriguing. The tiniest action can say a lot to others. That's why it is so important to be conscious of what your body is saying to people around you, especially if you are talking to a prospect, or a visitor at our BNI meetings.
Here are a few tips on how you can come across as an attractive and confident professional.
DO:
- Stand tall, even if you’re the shortest person in the room. Keeping your shoulders pushed back will lend you an air of confidence
- Move/walk like you know where you are going
- Make sure your palms are dry before shaking someone's hand. Sweaty palms indicate nervousness
- Shake hands firmly with one hand: not too tight or too limp. You don’t want to crush the other person’s hands or come across as unsure of yourself.
- Give out your namecard with two hands. It is a show of respect
- Make eye contact with the person you are talking to; this will establish trust and better connection. Hold a steady gaze instead of darting your eyes around
- Sit up straight and lean slightly forward towards the person you are talking to. It will show that you are paying attention.
- Stand with your arms lightly crossed behind your back.
- Nod your head occassionaly during conversation to show that you are paying attention.

DON'T:
- Keep your hands in your pockets all the time. This is often perceived as having something to hide.
- Stand with your hands on your hips if you don’t want to come across as confrontational.
- Avoid twirling or clicking your pen, fussing with your hair etc. Fidgeting is associated with boredom
- Lean against walls or tables. You'll appear tired and lazy.
- Turn away from the person you’re talking to in the middle of the conversation, otherwise you'll show you’re not interested in continuing it.
- Cross your arms in front of you tightly. It will seem like you are defensive or disinterested
- Stretch your legs too far out when sitting. It shows you're too relaxed and may also invade others' personal space
- Yawn with your mouth wide open. Do it discreetly if you have to. No one wants to count the fillings in your teeth!
